8) Former Elementary School Turned Commercial Complex
Nojima Scuola
This former elementary school was transformed into a community hub and commercial complex. Designed around the themes of “agriculture, food, learning, and art”, this unique building features a café, Italian restaurant, Marché of local goods, and a petting zoo.

The Scuola Marché sells about 250 products. Visitors can buy freshly baked bread, sample Awaji onion soup, and pick up locally made souvenirs in the colorful market.
At Restaurant Scuola, enjoy authentic Italian cuisine made from local ingredients. The menu was crafted by Chef Masayuki Okuda, an advocate of domestic produce utilization and named one of the world’s top 1000 chefs.

The café is the perfect place to stop by for a casual lunch or a coffee break. The café features a Dog Terrace where you can enjoy a bite with your pup. Your fuzzy companion will love running around the old school yard.
No visit to Nojima Scuola is complete without a stop at the petting zoo. Meet friendly goats and kissing alpacas. There are plenty of cute and cuddling animals like guinea pigs and bunnies. An admission fee is required.
What was once an abandoned elementary school has become a symbolic base of regional revitalization of the island, and a favorite spot among locals and visitors alike. Despite its transformation, the jovial atmosphere of this former elementary school remains.

Awaji Hanasajiki Hyogo Prefectural Park
Awaji Hanasajiki Hyogo Prefectural Park is a vast flower park located on Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. Seasonal flowers bloom from spring to autumn, bringing their unique beauty to every season.

11) Ancient Shrine Linked to the Creation of Japan
Izanagi- Jingu Shrine
Izanagi- Jingu Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Japan, and the only grand shrine in the Hyogo prefecture. It enshrines two deities, Izanagi and Izanami.

According to the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki, the oldest historical texts of Japan, the deity Izanagi and his wife Izanami created the country of Japan, beginning with Awaji Island. The shrine was built at the location where Izanagi resided after creating Japan according to the legend. The area surrounding the Izanagi Shrine is full of beautiful nature and historical buildings, perfect for a stroll after visiting the shrine.
In addition, on the 22nd of every month, the shrine is illuminated. Visiting the shrine lit up at night is an experience that transports you into a mystical world.
12) A Marvel of Modern Japanese Architecture
Awaji Yumebutai
Awaji Yumebutai was designed by world renowned architect Tadao Ando.

This sprawling complex combines modern design and the natural world in a way that yields lots of surprises. This spacious facility has lots to explore, including a botanical garden and a restaurant.
13) Temple where Heian-era history meets modern architecture
Honpukuji Temple

This temple is unlike any other in Japan. Honpukuji Temple was originally founded during the Heian period (794-1185). In 1991, the main hall was rebuilt by architect Tadao Ando, who is known for his creative use of natural elements and exposed concrete. The result is a unique mix of history and modern day. Created by the same architect as Awaji Yumebutai, it is recommended to visit these architectural wonders together on your trip to Awaji Island. The collaboration between the historical temple and Ando’s unique brutalist architecture is well worth a visit.

15) A Mythical Island from Japanese Lore
Nushima Island
This scenic location is deeply rooted in the history and mythology of Japan. According to the Kuniumi Story, Japan’s Creation Myth, the deities Izanagi and Izanami stood upon the heavenly bridge and churned the sea with the Amenonuhoko (heavenly spear). When they pulled it from the ocean, drops fell from the spear creating Onokoro Island. Standing of Onokoro Island, they created the rest of the Japanese archipelago, starting with Awaji Island.

There are many theories about where this mythical island of Onokoro is located around Awaji. Nushima is one of the most credible candidates. Located just 10 minutes by ferry off the southern tip of Awaji Island, this mystical spot is a great place to explore, with walking paths and shrines dedicated to the divine couple.
