Two Menus Showcase Awaji Island’s Finest Foods

The cuisine springs from the mind of Chef Hal Yamashita, Japan’s representative at the World Gourmet Summit and Hyogo Prefecture’s consultant curating selected foods from Hyogo’s culinary scene under the brand “shoku.” Grand Chariot’s menus unveil rare dishes that clearly show why Awaji Island’s ingredients are considered some of the best in the world.

The star of the lineup is Awaji Beef, renowned for its exceptional rarity and quality. Only the top 150 heads of cattle are selected to be sold under this name, making it one of the highest quality meats not only in Japan, but worldwide.

Review of the Awaji Beef Sankai Tomato Sukiyaki Course

grand chariot sukiyaki

Fresh vegetables mainly from Awaji Island, raw sea urchin, and tender beef are beautifully presented on the table. The pot is filled with onions and tomatoes, rich in minerals from the island’s natural surroundings. Each dish, filled with fresh ingredients, leaves a lasting impression on the palate.

For the main course, the highly-skilled staff prepare the sukiyaki dish elevated by the addition of fresh tomatoes. The meat and vegetables are brought to perfection in a waterless pot.

As the lid is lifted, the wonderful aroma arises of flavorful juices from the vegetables mingled with the high-quality fat from the meat, a tantalizing teaser of the pleasures to come. The succulent beef, dipped in a special sauce and topped with fresh sea urchin from Awaji Island, unfolds on the tongue in a complex, delightful mix of aromas and flavors that is both thrilling and deeply satisfying.

The addition of tomatoes introduces a refreshing acidity. At the waiter’s suggestion, I sprinkled a touch of shichimi sansho (seven-spice Japanese pepper) on the meat that accentuated the flavors even more. The symphony of sensory stimulation made for one of the best meals of my life.
