History of Awaji Island Grapes
Records state grapes came to Japan in the Nara period (710-794). Originating in the Middle East, grapes traveled through the Silk Road to China during the Tang Dynasty. After its arrival in Japan, it is said that Buddhist monk Gyoki established a medicinal seed garden at Daizenji Temple in the Katsunama area. During the Meiji Era (1868-1912), wine production began in Katsunuma around 1874 with the support of the government.
