Seasonal Fruits of Awaji: Autumn

Famous for its rich soil and mild climate, Awaji Island is a treasure trove of produce rich in flavor and nutrients. Home to many varieties of fruits, Awaji Island always has something new to offer as the seasons come and go. As the air cools and the leaves turn brown, let’s see what Awaji has to offer in autumn.

Awaji Island Figs

As the second largest producer of Figs in the Hyogo Prefecture with more than 70 farms on the island, figs are one of the most iconic fruits from Awaji. Brought from China during the Edo period (1603-1867), Awaji Island began producing figs in Goshiki (now Sumoto) in 1980. Awaji figs are characterized by their rich sweetness, and ripe figs can be enjoyed freshly picked – no peeling required!

For dessert, the “Fig Tart” showcases a homemade tart crust, topped with velvety custard cream and a single fresh fig.

Awaji Island Grapes

Grapes are one of the most famous autumn fruits on Awaji Island. Large, ripe, and fresh, grape picking is a popular autumn activity among Awaji locals from July to October.

Awaji Island Chestnuts

In Japan, chestnuts are typically associated with autumn. Unlike what the name suggests, chestnuts are actually fruit harvested from trees! On Awaji Island, two varieties of chestnuts are grown: “Tanzawa” which has a buttery texture suitable for cooking, and “Tsukuba” which is often roasted for its firmness. Awaji features many chestnut farms where you can pick and try them for yourself.

Passion Fruit from Awaji Island

In Japan, passion fruit is primarily grown in Okinawa – but it is also harvested on Awaji Island due to its similar tropical environment, suitable for growing passion fruits. In season from June to October, the clear, sunny skies of Awaji Island create an environment where passion fruits thrive.
