Traveling from Kyoto to Awaji Island, Japan

With the number of foreign visitors to Japan reaching record highs, Kyoto has become a must-visit destination, especially for those exploring Japan’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Known for its iconic temples, traditional tea houses, and beautiful gardens, Kyoto offers the very best of ancient Japan. Many tourists use Kyoto as a starting point to explore other tourist destinations, including Awaji Island.

From Kyoto, it’s easy to head to Awaji Island, a peaceful retreat offering breathtaking natural beauty. Despite its rural charm, the island is home to trendy seaside cafes, restaurants, and popular character theme parks.

Getting to Awaji Island is simple and convenient, with easy access from Kyoto. In this article, we will guide you on how to reach Awaji Island from Kyoto.

By Train from Kyoto Station to Sannomiya Station (Kobe)

The JR Special Rapid Service is the most efficient and cost-effective way to travel from Kyoto to Sannomiya Station. The journey takes around 50 minutes. Trains run frequently, usually every 15-20 minutes, and there are no transfers required, making it a smooth and convenient option for most travelers.

Alternatively, you can take the Shinkansen from Kyoto Station to Shin-Kobe Station, which takes about 30 minutes. From Shin-Kobe, it’s just a short 2-3 minute ride on the JR Kobe Line to Sannomiya Station. While this option is faster, it’s also more expensive and involves a transfer.

By Express Bus From Sannomiya (Kobe) to Awaji Island

From Sannomiya, the easiest way to reach Awaji Island is by taking the Awaji Resort Bus (Kita-Awaji West Coast Line), operated by Shinki Bus. This service offers direct access to popular destinations along Awaji Island’s west coast, including Nijigen no Mori and Hello Kitty facilities.

Please note the Kita-Awaji Nishi-Kaigan Line departs from the Shinki Bus Kobe Sannomiya Bus Terminal, which is not the same as the Sannomiya Bus Terminal (Mint Kobe). These two terminals are approximately a 2-minute walk apart—please refer to the map above to ensure you arrive at the correct departure point.

Secondary Option

While the Kita-Awaji Nishi-Kaigan Line (Shinki Bus) is your best option for traveling to Awaji Island, it only runs a few times a day, which might make it hard to line up your schedule with the bus.

Another option is to take a bus to Awaji IC, a major transit point on Awaji Island. These buses depart from both the Sannomiya Bus Terminal (Mint Kobe) and the Shinki Bus Kobe Sannomiya Bus Terminal, meaning you can depart from either location.

By Free Shuttle Bus From Awaji IC to Awaji Island West Coast

A free shuttle bus is available from Awaji IC, providing easy transportation to major destinations along Awaji Island’s west coast. If you arrive at Awaji IC using the second bus option, this shuttle will pick you up and take you to your desired location.

In addition to pickup service from Awaji IC, this shuttle also circulates between major facilities on the west coast, making it a convenient way to explore the area. Look for the bus with the design shown above, and check the article below for routes and schedules.

Simply inform the driver of your destination before boarding, and you’ll be all set! For details on routes and schedules, please refer to the article below.
