In recent years, our society has seen some notable trends and one of the most prominent ones is a move towards slow fashion.

Slow fashion is a movement advocating for sustainable and ethical practices in clothing production and consumption. It prioritizes quality over quantity, promoting the purchase of durable, timeless garments made with sustainable materials and produced under fair labor conditions.

There is a place on Awaji Island where you can truly appreciate the concept of slow fashion by participating in a unique indigo dyeing experience. In this article, we will explore this unique activity.

The Concept of Slow Fashion

Slow fashion, a movement emphasizing sustainability, ethical practices, and quality over quantity, arises in response to the negative environmental and social impacts of fast fashion, characterized by rapid production cycles and poor working conditions.

Its principles include prioritizing high-quality, durable garments over disposable clothing, promoting fair labor practices, and ensuring safe working conditions for garment workers. Additionally, slow fashion emphasizes the use of sustainable materials to reduce transportation-related carbon emissions and bolster local economies.

Another key aspect of slow fashion is its focus on timeless, classic designs that transcend trends and seasons, reducing the pressure to constantly purchase new clothing. By advocating for a more thoughtful and mindful approach to consumption, slow fashion encourages consumers to invest in pieces that will last for years, ultimately promoting sustainability and responsible consumer behavior.

How is Indigo Dyeing Related to Slow Fashion?

It emphasizes the use of natural dyes, such as indigo, which aligns with the slow fashion movement’s focus on sustainable materials. Unlike synthetic dyes that can be harmful to the environment and human health, natural dyes are biodegradable and often sourced from renewable plant-based sources, promoting eco-friendly practices.

The indigo dyeing experience also embodies the slow fashion ethos by emphasizing traditional craftsmanship and artisanal techniques, highlighting the value of quality over quantity. Participants gain a deeper appreciation for the labor and artistry involved in garment production, fostering mindfulness and intentionality in clothing consumption.

Traditional Japanese Dyeing Method on Awaji Island

On Awaji Island, there is a unique store-workshop named AiAii, owned by Sally Hancox from England and her Japanese husband Junichi Okada, which they established in 2019. The couple conduct workshops on dyeing fabrics made of cotton and linen using the natural indigo dyeing method. Indigo dyeing involves coloring natural materials in varying shades of blue, from pale to dark, obtained from the leaves of the persicaria tinctoria plant through fermentation.

The natural indigo dyeing method offers environmental benefits compared to chemical dyeing processes, as it produces less pollution and consumes less water. This eco-friendly process involves using only leaves and ash, and once completed, the leftover materials can be returned to the earth or composted.

The dyeing process begins with a thorough washing of the fabric to remove impurities. Next, it is immersed in a vat of indigo dye in controlled conditions of temperature and pH. After the initial dyeing, the fabric undergoes rinsing and oxidation to bind the indigo to the fibers. This dipping, squeezing, and rinsing sequence is repeated until the desired depth of color is achieved. Once dyed, the fabric is left to dry before it is ready for use.

Family Wellness Program’s Content

Insightful Fieldwork

“Tane no Chikara” offers transformative experiences for companies and educational institutions, prompting them to reconsider SDGs and challenge common assumptions through nature-based fieldwork on Awaji Island. Parents and children will gain insight into the vital connection between food and the environment.

The family wellness program instills fresh awareness and sparks inquiry by reexamining the atarimae or the perceived norms that saturate our daily lives. By delving into the essence of things and translating experiences and reflections into tangible actions, participants accumulate wisdom and develop a personal understanding of various concepts. Through hands-on fieldwork, families together will explore the impact of food on both mind and body.

Delicious and Healthy Zen Cuisine

Zenbo cuisine is made without the use of animal products, sugar, oil, dairy, or flour. Its seasonings are naturally brewed using traditional methods spanning one to three years. The miso, soy sauce, mirin, and other ingredients are sourced directly from breweries. There are also homemade amazake (sweet sake) and other seasonings that allow the original flavors of the ingredients to shine.

Nobuaki Fushiki, a seasoned chef specializing in fermented food and an “evangelist” of fermented food culture, who oversees Zenbo cuisine, injects humor into food education, starting with the basics of seasoning found in home kitchens. He engages participants in interactive discussions.

Additionally, families can go to the Zenbo deck, and try wellness activities like yoga and meditation for a holistic experience during the family wellness program.

About the Facilities

Zenbo Seinei, designed by the world-famous architect Shigeru Ban, is an eco-conscious Zen facility on Awaji Island. Made from Japanese Cedarwood, its 100-meter deck offers stunning views. You can participate in activities to improve wellness such as yoga and meditation.

Enjoy Seasonal Delicacies by Day at “Kyo-Banzai” on Ladybird Road

Obanzai is a style of cuisine native to Kyoto. It has started as a home cooking style, using a lot of seasonal vegetables, beans, seafood and sometimes meat, as a daily food for family members. The “Kyo-Banzai Gozen” at” Kyo-Banzai”, an obanzai specialty restaurant, comes with rice and miso soup along with seven kinds of homemade special small dishes (obanzai). Unlimited refills of rice and miso soup make this a hearty meal sure to satisfy any appetite. The assortment of dishes carefully prepared in small bowls are exquisite.

The menu offers a selection of fresh seafood, locally sourced Awaji Island vegetables, meat, and seasonal ingredients delicately seasoned to enhance their natural flavors, promoting a sense of well-being with each bite. The meal is categorized into pine, bamboo, and plum sets based on the number of small potted dishes. The following is the Ume Set, allowing you to select two dishes from the menu.

When you allow the fire to burn out and let what’s in the pot steam for a moment, the table-finished tofu presents itself with a soft appearance and a delicate flavor. It’s freshly prepared tofu, offering a gentle taste sensation.

The Kyoto-style white miso soup is rich with various ingredients, ensuring it’s satisfyingly filling. Packed with freshly harvested vegetables, it has a subtle sweetness and even makes you feel relaxed.

A small bowl in the set that we liked is below:

Deep-fried Shrimp-shaped Taro with Chrysanthemum Vegetable and Starchy Red Bean Paste

The ebiimo, shrimp-shaped taro, (literally shrimp potato) is served hot and fluffy, complemented by the delicious dashi broth enriched with red bean paste.
Try the healthy lunch at Kyo-Banzai, where you can enjoy a complete meal of traditional Japanese small dishes.

Ladybird Road where Kyo-Banzai is located is a seaside mall, housing a variety of restaurants, a vegan chocolate store, a shop offering goods around the world, and a marché selling freshly picked vegetables and processed goods. The mall is reminiscent of Europe, consisting of colorful buildings with a Mediterranean Flair. The great feature of this complex is that you can have a beautiful ocean view while dining. As the name suggests, you can also find cute ladybird (ladybug) designs on the wall of the buildings.

Many may not immediately consider Awaji Island for backpacking due to its well-deserved reputation for luxurious restaurants, cafes, and hotels. However, the island offers much more, having a rich history, stunning natural landscapes, and secluded spots. While transportation can pose challenges, it is readily available throughout the island. Doesn’t this sound like the perfect backpacking adventure?

In this article, we will provide you with a guide to destinations and a few tips for exploring Awaji Island on a backpacking adventure.

Getting Around Awaji Island

Transportation may not be the most convenient aspect of backpacking on Awaji Island, but that is part of what makes it an adventure, right? That being said, navigating the island is simpler than you might expect. Be prepared for plenty of walking since it is the best way to enjoy your backpacking adventure. A city bus circles the island for a flat fare of 500 yen, regardless of distance, with just one transfer needed to reach your destination.

If your destination lies on the northern part or west coast of Awaji Island, you are in luck, as there is a free shuttle bus servicing popular attractions in those areas. While buses are available, remember that you may need to walk considerable distances to and from bus stops, so be sure to wear comfortable footwear for your backpacking adventure.

Exploring all of Awaji Island’s Hidden Gems During Your Backpacking Adventure

If there is one thing that backpackers love, it is to discover the hidden gems in a certain location. Fortunately, Awaji Island is quite a mysterious island, in a very good way. Mythically speaking, it is known as the first island to exist in Japan. As a result, there are many historically significant shrines and small islands to explore. Your backpacking adventure won’t be complete without visiting at least some of these places.

Do not forget to include a visit to Izanagi Shrine, one of Japan’s most historically significant shrines. It is believed to be among the oldest in the country, with legends suggesting it was the residence of Izanagi, the deity credited with Japan’s creation. After imparting his powers to his daughter, Amaterasu, Izanagi spent his final days at the shrine. Experience the serenity of this sacred site, offering the opportunity for prayer and, if fortunate, witnessing ceremonial rituals performed by the shrine’s priests.

Exploring Nushima and Eshima also comes highly recommended, as both locations are believed to be among the first exact spots in Japan. Eshima, situated on the northern tip of Awaji Island, offers panoramic views of its surroundings from the outside.

On the other hand, Nushima lies farther south, accessible only via ferry, and covered in verdant hills, making it perfect for leisurely hikes along its easy trails. Within just a few hours, you can traverse the entire island, visit its quaint shrines and temples, and immerse yourself in its tranquil ambiance.

Try all the Local Hands-on Experiences on Awaji Island

Backpacking adventures often entail immersive learning experiences, and what better way to do this than by engaging in hands-on activities? Awaji Island, renowned for its rich culture and history, offers numerous opportunities for such experiences. Our top recommendation is delving into the art of indigo dyeing, utilizing locally grown indigo leaves to craft natural dyes completely free from chemical additives. Additionally, we suggest exploring the art of incense-making, as Awaji Island is famously known as the “island of incense”.

Read this article to learn more about the many hands-on experiences available on Awaji Island.

For enthusiasts of sake or other alcoholic beverages, we highly recommend a visit to Koshunoya, an establishment dedicated solely to vintage sake. Here, you have the unique opportunity to try your hand at crafting your own vintage sake. During this hands-on experience, you will have the chance to select, blend, and bottle your very own aged sake from a curated collection featuring approximately 30 renowned brands.

Unique Experiences to Fill up Your Backpacking Adventure

Backpacking adventures are all about discovering new and unique experiences, and Awaji Island offers plenty of them. Among the island’s top attractions are its anime and Hello Kitty theme parks. One must-visit spot is Nijigen no Mori, an anime theme park boasting a variety of popular anime-related attractions, including Naruto, Godzilla, Shin-chan, and more. If you are an anime enthusiast, this park will be sure to delight you.

For fans of Hello Kitty, the HELLO KITTY SHOWBOX and HELLO KITTY SMILE theme parks are must-visit destinations. Here, you can immerse yourself in everything Hello Kitty, from lunch shows featuring the iconic character to projection mapping-style theme park experiences.

In addition to exploring attractions, backpacking adventures often involve sampling unique culinary delights, and miele Café on the West Coast of Awaji Island comes highly recommended. You can try their specialty whitebait pizza and onion pizza, which come with unlimited toppings of whitebait and onions, offering a flavorful taste of the region. Do not forget to save room for dessert as their honey-themed treats are truly delicious.

Closing

There you have it—a brief guide to embarking on a backpacking adventure on Awaji Island. While it may seem daunting at first, the experience is much more manageable than you might expect. Besides, a few challenges along the way only add to the thrill of backpacking. The destinations we’ve introduced are just a glimpse of the wonders and hidden gems waiting to be discovered on the island, so be sure to explore every corner of the picturesque Awaji Island.

The Pritzker Architecture Prize is the pinnacle of achievement for architects, likened to the Nobel Prize for its significance. Over the years, this esteemed award’s recipients have given the world unique and brilliant architectural concepts. This year, Japan celebrates another laureate, Riken Yamamoto, whose visionary work has left an indelible mark on the architectural landscape.

In this article, we briefly delve into Yamamoto’s contributions and explore some of the awe-inspiring structures designed by past Pritzker Architecture Prize winners on Awaji Island.

What is the Pritzker Architecture Prize?

The Pritzker Architecture Prize is widely regarded as the most prestigious accolade in the field. Established in 1979, it aims to honor architects whose work demonstrates a combination of talent, vision, and commitment to excellence. Often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Architecture”, the Pritzker Prize recognizes architects for their significant contributions to the built environment and lasting impact on the field. Recipients of the award receive a cash prize, a formal citation, and a bronze medallion.

Get to Know the 2024 Winner Laureate Riken Yamamoto

‘For me, to recognize space, is to recognize an entire community. The current architectural approach emphasizes privacy, negating the necessity of societal relationships. However, we can still honor the freedom of each individual while living together in architectural space as a republic, fostering harmony across cultures and phases of life.‘
-Riken Yamamoto

Yamamoto’s buildings seamlessly blend into the everyday life, serving as both a backdrop and a fulcrum for community engagement. As the 53rd laureate and the 9th from Japan, Yamamoto was recognized for his commitment to fostering community through architecture.

His ability to understand the boundaries of spaces offers a blueprint for future cities. Over his 5-decade career, his designs often feature terraces, courtyards, and outdoor spaces that facilitate interaction with the built environment, promoting connectivity and social cohesion.

Some of Mr. Yamamoto’s notable buildings encompass a diverse range of projects across various regions. These include the Future University Hakodate Research Building and the SUSTRG Office Project in Hokkaido, as well as the Yokosuka Museum of Art in Kanagawa Prefecture, all constructed in 2005 and 2007.

In 2008, Yamamoto’s designs extended to include the Namics Techno Core in Niigata, Guan Yuan Housing in Beijing, and Dragon Lily’s House in Gunma. More recently, in 2018, the Circle at Zürich Airport has added an air of elegance to the Swiss landscape.

2) Shigeru Ban Designs on Awaji Island

Known for the innovative use of unconventional materials like cardboard and wood, Shigeru Ban stands as a towering figure in Japanese architecture. His pioneering work in sustainable and cost-effective building solutions, particularly for providing shelter to refugees, disaster victims, and marginalized communities, has garnered him widespread acclaim on the global stage. Like his esteemed counterpart Tadao Ando, Ban’s groundbreaking contributions to the field of architecture were recognized with the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize.

Among Shigeru Ban’s celebrated works on Awaji Island are Zenbo Seinei, a Zen wellness center characterized by its predominant use of wood, reflecting his distinctive architectural style. This architectural masterpiece exudes a sense of tranquility and harmony, with its majestic form appearing to effortlessly float above the lush canopy of surrounding trees. Another notable creation is Haru San San, which reflects Ban’s emphasis on integrating wooden structures seamlessly into the natural environment.

For a more in-depth exploration of these architectural masterpieces, we have previously made a detailed article that delves into their unique features and significance.

Spring in Japan is enchanting, drawing visitors with vibrant festivals, breathtaking scenery, and delectable cuisine. The season showcases the country’s charm and beauty. In this article, we explore some special highlights of springtime in Japan. As March unfolds and the temperature rises, let’s look at some must-visit destinations to make sure you make the most of the season.

Spring Traditions

Vibrant festivals abound in Japan this season. Traditional music, dance, parades, and street performances provide a glimpse into the country’s rich cultural heritage. Spring also brings mild temperatures and comfortable weather, an ideal time for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and exploring historical sites before the heat and humidity of summer.

The mild temperature is also perfect for hanami, a cherished Japanese tradition during cherry blossom season. The sakura, or cherry blossom, in Japan is considered a symbol of the fleeting nature of life. Its delicate beauty has captivated people for centuries, inspiring poetry, literature, and art. Families, friends, and colleagues gather under cherry trees to enjoy food, drinks, and each other’s company amidst the breathtaking beauty of the blossoms.

Besides cherry blossoms, a variety of other flowers also reach full bloom at this time of year, including azaleas, wisteria, tulips, and peonies. Picturesque landscapes are found everywhere as these blossoms join sakura in botanical gardens, temples, and parks in colorful floral displays.

Captivating Spring Cuisine

Spring in Japan brings a bounty of seasonal ingredients to Japanese cuisine. Bamboo shoots, known as takenoko, are a popular spring delicacy, celebrated for their tender texture and earthy flavor. These shoots find their way into various dishes, from soups and stir-fries to tempura. Another seasonal delight is fuki, or butterbur, a plant prized for its tender shoots and bitter-sweet taste. Fuki is often pickled or simmered in dashi broth to highlight its unique flavor profile.

A wide variety of sweets also reflect the vibrant colors and flavors of the season. One iconic treat is sakura mochi, a delicate confection consisting of a sweet pink rice cake filled with red bean paste wrapped in a pickled cherry blossom leaf. Another popular spring sweet is strawberry daifuku, featuring fresh strawberries wrapped in a soft mochi rice cake and filled with sweet red bean paste. Sakura-themed desserts, such as sakura-flavored ice cream, chiffon cakes, and jelly, are also popular during this time.

The climbing temperatures also bring a wealth of fresh seafood delivered by optimal conditions for fishing along Japan’s coastlines. Cherry shrimp, sweetfish (ayu), and sea bream (tai) are just a few of the culinary delights in spring. These seasonal catches are featured in a wide range of dishes, including sushi, sashimi, grilled dishes, and hot pots.

How to Enjoy Spring on Awaji Island

Spring cuisine takes center stage on Awaji Island, known as the “land of food” (Miketsukuni). The island, which served as exclusive suppliers to the Imperial Court for centuries, continues its rich culinary heritage evident in the abundant local seafood and produce. This season, don’t miss Awaji Island’s spring-themed delicacies.
